American Eagle can take you to the beach

Soon, you will be able to get to the beach at South Padre Island a little faster. American Eagle Airlines is launching nonstop flights to Brownsville on June 11.

Three daily flights will depart from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, arriving at Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport about an hour and a half later.

A drive from the Brownsville airport to the beach may take about 30 minutes, less time than is needed to collect your luggage at most airports. The international bridge to Matamoros, Mexico, is even closer: It’s only a couple of miles from the airport.

South Padre Island is moving up on the list of the top vacation resorts, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Last year, Conde Nast ‘Traveler’ named South Padre one of the top thirty beaches in the world. Now ‘Men’s Fitness’ Magazine has name South Padre one of the country’s ‘ten hotspots worth visiting’ this summer, and citied activities like body boarding and windsurfing, and that pleases South Padre Convention and Visitors Bureau manager Dan Quandt.

“People who are interested in Men’s Fitness magazine, for example, are not couch potato types,” he said.

“As a vacation destination, South Padre Island is affordable and the people there are amazingly hospitable,” the magazine wrote. “South Padre offers warm, turquoise waters and waves that are perfect for body boarding. Laguna Madre Bay, between the Island and mainland, is home to some of the best windsurfing in the world.”

The recognition couldn’t come at a better time for South Padre, which is enjoying a boom largely due to the high price of gasoline. It is reinventing itself as Caribbean beach resort that doesn’t require a passport, long lines at the airport, or airline baggage check fees.

Quandt says he’s not surprised by the magazine’s high praise for the people of South Padre Island. He points out that tourism is the sole industry on the Island.

“We have people who are genuinely interested in making sure that our visitors have a good time,” he said.

did you know that one of the best beaches in this nation is in texas? south padre island is home to some great sand and palm trees that make photographs ideal. horseback through that scenery and it’s even better!

my senior year of college we went to texas for spring break as we were sort of strapped for cash (as students are) and being able to travel domestically provided the most financial relief while still allowing us to get away. there weren’t many options of where to horseback ride, but the one place we found was awesome, so that didn’t matter. you didn’t have to stick to trails or ride single file down a narrow path, it’s all open beach waiting to be rode.

island equestrian center has information online to, so you can call and check that it meets all your standards (for those of you more advanced riders). coupons are also available online, so it pays to plan. you can take in sun rises, sun sets or going the middle of the day to just soak up some sun and check out the sand dunes.
